Add Fuel, born Diogo Machado, is a Portuguese visual artist whose work reimagines the decorative traditions of his homeland through a contemporary lens. Originally known as “Add Fuel to the Fire”, Diogo has become internationally recognized for his distinctive reinterpretations of azulejos—the iconic, blue-hued ceramic tiles synonymous with Portuguese culture.
In “Unity” (2019), Add Fuel blends centuries-old tile motifs with playful, modern elements drawn from his influences in video games, comic books, animation, and science fiction. Look closely and you might spot Pac-Man characters embedded within the intricate tilework—an homage to the digital age layered seamlessly into classical design.
A hallmark of his work is the illusion of depth: Add Fuel often paints on brick surfaces, making the tiles appear as though they’re peeking out from behind torn wallpaper or weathered facades.
