Race & Main in Holyoke, MA

Project Overview

The Race and Main Lot Development Project, led by Beyond Walls, is an ambitious initiative to transform a vacant lot at the corner of Race and Main streets in Holyoke into a vibrant community hub. With a vision to celebrate the local Puerto Rican culture, this project aims to activate the space through culturally significant murals, dynamic programming, and events that strengthen community ties and stimulate economic growth.

Context and Impact

Race Street is experiencing a cultural and economic revival with repurposed mills now bustling with shops, offices, cafes, and housing. Meanwhile, Main Street is poised to become the official Puerto Rican Art and Cultural District, known for its rich cultural identity, reflected in local bodegas, restaurants, and residences.

The Race and Main Lot serves as a vital bridge between these two neighborhoods, fostering interaction, collaboration, and shared cultural experiences. This project is supported by a diverse range of community partners including Lighthouse School, Mass Humanities, Holyoke Community College (HCC) Culinary Arts, and others, who are excited about the potential of this site to become a focal point for cultural and economic activities.

Project Goals

·      Enhance Local Arts and Cultural Infrastructure:

·      Murals: Install 3 to 5 murals on portable shipping containers led by renowned Puerto Rican artist David Zayas and local muralists. The installations will celebrate Puerto Rican culture, with periodic updates to maintain their dynamism.

·      Foster Community Engagement and Inclusion:

·      Community Initiatives: Host street art events, block parties, community gardening, and social events in collaboration with local organizations.

·      Educational Outreach: Integrate the murals into Beyond Walls’ mural tours, engaging over 4,000 students in learning about the significance of street art over 24 months.

·      Support Local Economic Development:

·      Economic Revitalization: Attract tourists, boost local businesses, and create economic opportunities by featuring local street vendors and supporting Latinx small businesses through funding and partnerships.
