Beyung

Bryan Beyung 王永財 is a visual artist of Chinese-Cambodian origin based in Montreal. Through muralism, painting, drawing and installation, he addresses the diasporic experience to question the notions of belonging, collective memory, hybridity as well as duality and impermanence. Beyung’s work is part of the currents of neo-muralism, post-graffiti and contemporary painting, where public space and the canvas become terrains for the exploration of matter and visual and social reflection.

Her work has been presented at La Foire en Art Actuel de Québec, La Centrale Powerhouse and Pierre-François Ouellette (Montreal), Forest For The Trees (Seattle), Urban Art Biennale (Völklingen) and during residencies at Jardins Racine (Racine), Art by Friends (Annecy) and Void Projects (Miami) among others. Her murals can be seen in several cities, including Calgary, Rabat, St. Petersburg, Boston, Lynn, Lowell, Montreal, Annecy, Phnom Penh and Port-au-Prince among others.

Additional Artist Information

Statement from the Artist: My practice is based on an auto-ethnographic approach, where I draw inspiration from personal stories to explore notions of identity such as belonging, migration, hybridity and collective memory. It also questions themes such as impermanence and duality, halfway between tradition and modernity, destruction and reconstruction, leaving or returning. Inspired by photographic research and the observation of everyday life, my practice draws on classical painting, graphic design and urban culture. Through these elements, I seek to transform images, objects and events into visual narratives. Much like the superposition of layers in painting, I use matter to establish a link between the visible and the invisible, the expressed and the unspoken, thus inviting the public to discover the hidden dimensions and nuances of the human experience.
