Angurria

Omar García, better known as “Angurria,” is a Dominican muralist and artist who has gained recognition both in his country and on the international scene thanks to his distinctive style and focus on Dominican identity. His work includes collaborations with prominent figures such as film director Ava DuVernay, which has strengthened his presence in the global artistic sphere. He has also participated in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film “In The Heights” and in the 2020 MLB preseason game in the DR, evidencing his growth as a creator of impact and international relevance.

Angurria’s most notable project is his series “Doña Patria: Dominican Beauty,” a visual representation of the Dominican woman that has deeply resonated both nationally and internationally. This series and her diverse mural creations have been exhibited at festivals and art events including Hidden Treasure (Bremen, Germany, 2024), Open Wide Walls Mural Fest (Sacramento, 2023), Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism’s Change The Seasons (Times Square, NY), Color Caribe Mural Fest (San Juan, Puerto Rico 2022), Expo Dubai (Dubai, 2022), Wynwood (Miami, 2021-2022), Pow Wow (Worcester, MA), Extra Muros (San Juan, PR), and the Museum of Urban Art of Latin America in Lima, Peru, demonstrating her ability to fuse traditional and contemporary elements in her art, bridging diverse cultures.

Before emerging as a central figure in muralism and urban art, Angurria has had a successful career as an art director and graphic designer in the advertising industry, where he has stood out for his mastery in design and illustration. This solid technical foundation has been crucial to his artistic evolution, allowing him to develop a unique visual language that celebrates Dominican culture and heritage, connecting deeply with the public. He has shared his knowledge as an educator in prestigious institutions such as the Chavón School of Arts, APEC University, Brothers, Centro León and Creative Box and has been a mentor on various occasions, highlighting the creation of the Dominican Republic Country Brand, through the program “A Republic Full of Talent.”

As a muralist, Angurria has transformed more than 70 urban spaces inside and outside the country into canvases that tell stories of his homeland, taking his talent beyond Dominican borders. His work has been awarded in competitions such as “Tiempo de Solidaridad”, in addition to being selected to design the third Menina of the Dominican Republic for the Meninas Madrid Gallery 2023 , highlighting his ability to intertwine art with powerful and relevant social messages.
