Lowell is the latest Massachusetts city to showcase the Beyond Walls’ Street Art Tour 2022.
The venture, which includes the creation of more than 20 large-scale murals over a four-month period, will arrive in Lowell on Sunday, Aug. 14, followed by additional installations in Lynn, where Beyond Walls, a leading proponent of civic engagement and education through public art, is based.
The tour launched in Holyoke in June and continued in Fall River during July.
Beyond Walls partnered with Lowell-based Project Learn and ArtUp Lowell in 2021 to have murals by Latinx muralists Angurria and David Zayas installed on two downtown buildings. They will build on their partnership to have seven new murals created around the city to honor Lowell’s cultural diversity. Mural locations include the UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College campuses, the Coalition for a Better Acre, and the Eliot Church, among others.
The Lowell project will include tours and hands-on activities, educational programming, and the participation of Lowell-based artists.
“Together, ArtUp Lowell and Beyond Walls will join forces to produce world-class murals and programs celebrating our diverse community, its history, and the significant contributions of the city’s vibrant Cambodian and Afro-Caribbean populations,” said LZ Nunn, Executive Director, Project Learn.
The Beyond Walls Street Art Tour 2022 will provide greater access to the arts, unite local organizations, educators, businesses, and city leadership around a common mission, and boost the creative arts economy.
